In a grocery store you would never expect to pay a higher price for the exact same can of corn that another customer also bought. But in many areas of retailing, those kinds of different prices for the same product do exist. It's usually subtle and oftentimes consumers aren't even aware of these so called targeted promotions. Two University of Michigan Business School professors recently looked into how consumers react to these selling tactics and what it can mean for companies.

Governor Engler wants widespread high-speed Internet access in Michigan to be part of his legacy. The state legislature is debating his plan that would give incentives for phone, cable, or internet companies to spread high speed Internet service across the state. But some critics say the Michigan Hi-Speed Internet plan will only succeed if demand for faster connections rises, and right now, Michigan consumers don't seem that interested. Michigan is known for the manufacture of automobiles. But only about 25 percent of those employees in the auto industry actually work for the Big Three. The rest work for the various parts suppliers and service contractors that support the automakers. As G-M, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler struggle through the current recession, suppliers have struggled too.
